In September of 2025 my wife Alexandra (Lexy) Kunzman and I visited Venice, Italy. During that trip I visited the Museo Storico Navale di Venezia, an Italian navy museum in near the Arsenal, the Italian Navy base in Venice. While touring the musuem’s there were beautiful maps of Venetian forts around the Medeterian but little explanation of were the forts were located. In this website I will attempt to document were the forts are geographically for better context.
.
The first fortress I would like to discuss is Fortezza of Souda (Suda) which is on the northern western shore of Crete. This fort controls the anchorage of Souda Bay, which is still an import Greek and Nato base to this day.

Above is a picture of the fort that hands in museum.
